This paper examines the effect of two kinds of pension, namely New Rural Pension Scheme (NRPS) and Chengjubao, on the intrahousehold bargaining power of women. By utilizing an eligibility age of 60, we conduct a regression discontinuity (RD) design to study. We find that the pension served as a positive income shock generally increases the women’s bargaining power on day-to-day purchases and this degree of increment varies by the local view of gender equality, which is used to temper the endogeneity problem. This may be explained by the relatively high income share of family after receiving the pension.
